Update: My 5 stars remain because I meant every word of my original review. I do, however, want to add a couple of things I learned after completing my treatment that may be helpful for future patients. When my braces were removed, one of my wisdom teeth was filed down during the finishing process. I could immediately feel a difference before leaving the office. Dr. Ortega checked my teeth afterward, but nothing concerning was mentioned at the time. I declined the additional charge for a cleaning after braces removal because I prefer having my regular dentist perform my cleanings and feel I get a more thorough cleaning there. At that appointment, my dentist noticed that a significant amount of the tooth had been filed down. Thankfully, she said I was still within a safe range, but as an extra precaution, she prescribed a high-fluoride toothpaste for me to use nightly. The second thing I think patients should be aware of is the cost of replacement retainers. Things happen, and retainers can easily be lost—especially when you have children or teenagers. I absolutely expected there to be a replacement cost; however, I was surprised to learn that replacing one retainer is $300, or $600 for both. Because of the price, I shopped around and received comparative quotes from two other orthodontic offices in the Waterford area, neither of which had treated me. Both quoted me less for replacement retainers. Both offices also use a 3D digital scanner rather than traditional putty impressions and send the retainers out to be fabricated, whereas Bella Smiles makes their retainers in-house. I simply think this is helpful information to know ahead of time when considering the long-term costs of orthodontic treatment, particularly for parents of younger patients who may be more likely to lose a retainer. None of this changes the positive experience I had during my treatment, which is why my five-star rating remains. I just believe reviews are most helpful when they include both the positives and the things you wish you had known beforehand. Original review: Always a pleasure at Bella Smiles! Their team is especially wonderful with children. I started my orthodontic journey a little over a year ago, not long after my child. At a recent visit, I mentioned to Dr. Ortega that my canines were bothering me because they were tilted inward. Honestly, she couldn’t really see an obvious issue and was a little hesitant, but she still listened carefully and said, “Let’s see how it goes.” She did mention being concerned about potentially creating spacing, but the relief I experienced afterward was completely worth it. Within about a week, I noticed a huge difference. For a long time, I would wake up with jaw pain and strain. I tend to clench my jaw at night, and I felt that my inward-pointing canines were preventing my teeth from settling comfortably. As my canines adjusted outward, that discomfort improved significantly, and I also noticed myself clenching much less. Dr. Ortega’s patience, knowledge, and willingness to listen mean so much to me. She has always taken my concerns seriously, even when I focus on the smallest details, and throughout my treatment I felt confident and cared for.
